For approximately ten millennia, the area that would become Henderson County, NC was a part of the Cherokee Nation.Initially a portion of Buncombe County, it was finally declared a separate county in 1838 and was named for Judge Leonard Henderson, a former Chief Justice of the State Supreme Court. With the Pisgah Ledge in the west and the Saluda and Blue Ridge Mountains along the county’s southern and eastern borders, Henderson’s various cities and towns are surrounded by impressive mountain views and the terrain features dramatic elevation changes. Hendersonville serves as Henderson County’s county seat and is also the largest city in the county.
